Turtle watching in Tobago

Tobago is one of the main nesting grounds for the giant leatherback turtle. From March to August they come up the beach at night to lay their eggs, and with a guide you can watch them, and sometimes see them glide back out to sea, without disturbing them.

Tobago is one of the main nesting grounds for the giant leatherback turtle. Get your night on as you journey to view these majestic creatures making their way up the beach to lay their precious eggs. In season, March to August, you can see them most nights, and possibly catch pictures as they glide back out to sea.

Turtle encounter guidelines

  • When a turtle is sighted, retreat slowly to 20 m away and get comfortable, nesting can take up to 2 hours.
  • Stay behind the turtle at all times; approaches are led by knowledgeable guides.
  • Flashlights only behind the turtle, fitted with red LED bulbs or filters, and kept to a bare minimum.
  • No flash photography, it can blind and disorient turtles and hatchlings. Infrared / low-light video is acceptable. (SOS)
