There are birds everywhere, but nothing as magnificent as those at the Little Tobago bird sanctuary. Imagine a whole island dedicated just to birds. After an incredible hike to the top, feast your eyes on the glorious Audubon's Shearwater, Brown Booby, Brown Noddy, Sooty and Bridled Terns, Frigate bird, and Red-billed Tropicbird nesting with their chicks.
On the journey back, get ready to get wet at the Japanese Garden or the famous Angel Reef, snorkel to your heart's delight over the largest brain corals, manta rays, turtles, and a reef teeming with marine life.
Little Tobago lies off Speyside, at Tobago's northeast tip. The crossing passes the reefs of Goat Island, and some of our trips go by glass-bottom boat; ask when you book.
A little history
- In 1909 Sir William Ingram introduced the Greater Bird of Paradise to the island to save the species from the plume trade in New Guinea.
- After his death in 1924, his heirs deeded the island to the Government of Trinidad and Tobago as a wildlife sanctuary.
- The birds were last filmed by a National Geographic crew in 1958; after Hurricane Flora in 1963 the population is presumed extinct.
