For the avid bird watchers, this one is for you. Take out your binoculars and be warned, because you can see over 60 species of birds in their natural habitats at Buccoo Marsh, Grafton Sanctuary or Petit Trou Lagoon.
Some of the birds you can see are Egrets, Lapwings, Herons, Kingfishers, Sandpipers, Plovers and many more.
Bring binoculars and wear comfortable walking shoes.
Buccoo Marsh:
Wetlands are scarce in Tobago so migrant shorebirds have few choices of places to feed. Buccoo Marsh has produced most of Tobago’s records of Old World species as well as Trinidad and Tobago’s first record of Wilson’s Phalarope. Other species that can be seen include the following:
Least Grebe, Pied-billed Grebe, Anhinga, Scarlet Ibis (rarely), Fulvous, Black-bellied WhitlingDucks, Masked Duck, Osprey Merlin, Rufous-vented Chachalaca, Black-bellied (Grey) Plover, and many more. It is best to visit early in the morning when the sun is behind you. (Birdwatchers Guide to Trinidad and Tobago, William Murphy)
